The Practice of Design

On one hand, Sawhorse represents our own usage needs, and on the other hand, it carries symbolic significance for the studio itself. Just like the principle we initially set: our own designs should be made by our own hands as much as possible.
This is actually an important method for refining our designs. The transition from "design" to "implementation" offers numerous possibilities, requiring repeated and in-depth contemplation and reflection. We believe that by putting our hands into action, fully dedicating ourselves to validating our thoughts, it brings inner tranquility, and then everything else will naturally fall into place.

Although we are not followers of John Ruskin [1], his exploration of the relationship between craftsmen, craftsmanship, and architectural quality over 170 years ago still provides inspiration for contemplating the relationship between humans and work today. In "THE SEVEN LAMPS OF ARCHITECTURE," specifically in "THE LAMP OF LIFE," Ruskin believed that the will of the maker and the act of craftsmanship imbue architecture with vitality, and creating with one's own hands is a true manifestation of human vitality.

他写到“For we are not sent into this world to do any thing into which we cannot put our hearts. We have certain work to do for our bread, and that is to be done strenuously; other work to do for our delight, and that is to be done heartily: neither is to be done by halves and shifts, but with a will; and what is not worth this effort is not to be done at all.Perhaps all that we have to do is meant for nothing more than an exercise of the heart and of the will, and is useless in itself; but, at all events, the little use it has may well be spared if it is not worth putting our hands and our strength to. ”[2]

The spirit of the object is revealed through the structure itself

The design of the sawhorse incorporates sturdy square timber, which is salvaged from demolished buildings. The trapezoidal wedges connect the two ends, creating a strong stylistic feature at the edges. The dovetail joints supporting the legs are exposed, allowing viewers to witness the authenticity of the structure along with the wedges.

The design of the office desk is an extension of the sawhorse concept. The modular approach is integrated throughout the design practice. The birch plywood tabletop is connected to the frame using dovetail joints, while the desk legs are installed with mortise and tenon joints and embedded fixtures, collectively creating a stable tabletop and comfortable leg space. A single 2-meter-long wooden beam spans across both ends, with three cross braces resting on the beam, and the T-shaped legs converge from both ends, hinting at how the structure unfolds.

These two designs aim to explore the beauty derived from structure, discarding any unnecessary decorations and curves. They showcase masculinity through the overall construction and scale. The rough and simple craftsmanship, along with the use of honest materials, form the macro-level design language. Lastly, the slightly decorative mortise and tenon joints add a sense of completeness to the structure.
